Intro

What would the web be without menus and a way for users to navigate? While our formal education is greatly focused like a sharp nail on the things we have to know, and know well in order to shine the brightest in this small industry called interactive developers. We also realize that just watching and learning the things that are important can get a bit, well, overwhelming at times. As such, we developed a nice break for our Elite members by creating a live format where our students can ask questions between lessons, present issues that we can then solve together, in addition to voting on the next favorable topic of interest in the world of Flash. The live events are more than just that but some things we want to keep only for our elite.

The recordings are in a bit of lower quality, and as we aren't doing any editing on the files you get me (or us as I should say) as we are live. These include unplanned errors, real questions from students and best yet, a live experience of how a developer confronts an issue. Edited content and polished videos can only take you through 1/2 the journey, the other 1/2 is learning from mistakes and realizing that it's quite alright not to be right all the time. In fact, 70-80% of most developers' time is dedicated to bug fixing. If we can reduce that percentage to 50-60%, you will be faster then most people you know and better. Now, with that said errors are great bugs with a positive spin, in that they help you learn about things you don't know yet.

Creating an ActionScript 3.0 Flash menu in less then 30 minutes

One of our students in our live event from 03/27/11 asked us to create a menu in flash. I thought why not accomplish it together live and so we did. The video is not edited at all as I really want to keep this authentic, fun relaxed, and non-hyped environment. In this video you will learn a bit about movie clips, text, events, and getting urls to open up (get URL for the oldies or navigate ToUrl in AS3).

Note: We recommend you watch this after taking at least 1/2 of the courses in the developer basics.

Note: We will upload in the next few days the source files for this video.
